How to Get Your International Driver's Permit in 15 Minutes

Updated: Nov 19, 2024

Traveling abroad is always an exciting adventure, but navigating the rules of the road in a foreign country can be tricky. In some places, your U.S. driver’s license might not be enough, and that’s where an International Driver's Permit (IDP) comes in handy.

This simple document can save you from potential headaches and is recognized in many countries worldwide. Let’s dive into how you can get your IDP in just 15 minutes.

Why You Need an International Driver's Permit

Some countries do not recognize a U.S. driver’s license but do accept an IDP. Others may honor your license but require a translation into the local language. Additionally, while a country’s government might not mandate an IDP, car rental companies within that country, like Hertz, might require one. Given the simplicity and low cost of obtaining an IDP, it’s a smart move to get one before your trip if you plan on renting a car and driving abroad.

The Quick and Easy Process

1. Locate Your Nearest AAA Office

The first step is to find the nearest AAA office. Fortunately, you don’t need an appointment. You can simply walk in and request an International Driver’s Permit.

2. Fill Out the Application

You have the option to fill out a hard copy of the application on-site or download it online in advance to save some time. The form is straightforward and will ask for your:

  • Name

  • Address

  • Date of birth

  • Contact information

  • Countries you plan to visit

3. Gather Required Documents

To complete your application, you’ll need:

  • Two Passport Photos: You can get these taken at your local CVS or Rite Aid. If you don’t have photos, AAA can take them for an additional $12 if you’re not a AAA member.

  • A Valid U.S. Driver’s License

  • $20 USD Permit Fee

4. Submit Your Application

Submit your filled-out application, photos, driver’s license, and the permit fee to the AAA representative. They will compile all your information into a booklet, which serves as your International Driver’s Permit (Valid for 1 year).

Why It’s Worth It

The entire process takes no more than 15 minutes. For such a short investment of time, you gain the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re covered for driving in multiple countries. Even if you don’t plan to drive, having an IDP can be a useful form of identification while you’re exploring the world.

So, next time you’re planning an international trip, remember to stop by your local AAA office and get your International Driver’s Permit. It’s a quick, affordable step that can make your travels smoother and more enjoyable. Safe travels!
